Struggling with the process

I love experimenting with materials and finding a flow, but this activity involved a different mindset.  It is hard to find a flow with glue and scissors! I had a lot of stuff stuck to my fingers and felt really clumsy. I sprinkled on sand from the site for texture, as well as gesso and felt, and added string to follow the rock lines. I enjoyed playing with the push and pull between texture and the smooth surface of the glue. I was working off a photo from the site, but also just testing what different materials would do.

Inking up was quite demanding, and I wish I'd started with smaller plates (this is one nearly A3). The first print was very high contrast and stark, but I really like some of the areas with glue marks, there's lots of scope for more play there.  The sand and string left heavy embossing which I also liked, but the tone is super dark. I tried rolling up over the surface with a different colour, but should have used a bigger roller as edge lines are visible.  Still, the process and possibilities are starting to reveal themselves.  Time for another plate!

First collagraph!

Tried a roll up over the plate, but needed a bigger roller as the edges showed. Probably not the right sort of plate do try this technique actually. The ghost print is more interesting (on left).
